New OneDrive Windows 10 Universal App to be released this winter

  • Enterprise users can manage company-wide rollouts for Windows 10 updates.
  • New Windows broswer 10 finally gets a proper name: Microsoft Edge.
  • The operating system will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 users during the first year.
  • If you do not upgrade in the first year, you will be charged. There has been some confusion around pricing – but Microsoft is expected to charge a one-off license fee and NOT move to a subscription model.
  • Windows 10 will launch in late-2015, likely by the end of July. The Technical Preview will end on 15 April 2015.
  • Microsoft also debuted the 84in Microsoft Surface Hub and Windows Holographic. The latter will allow users to create 3D models via a custom-built HoloLens.
  • Android and iOS apps will run on the new OS.

Windows 10 will launch globally in 190 countries this summer, and details about what to expect from the next-gen OS are slowly being revealed – officially and via leaks. Here’s our roundup of the latest Windows 10 news.

15/05/15: A Windows 10 Mobile update, build 10080, has introduced support for the HTC One phone, as well as a first look at the new Windows Store Beta for mobile.The Store Beta will allow users to download previews for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote – the first time the universal apps will be available to try for Windows Phone.

In Microsoft’s blog post accompanying the announcement, the company explains that movies and TV have been added to the store across all devices, with music coming soon.They say: “We’re really excited to get a build out for Lumia 930, Lumia Icon, Lumia 640XL, and HTC One (M8) owners who have been wanting to participate, and also to get new apps, Store Beta and Office Preview apps into your hands.”

An Xbox app, camera app and video app are all also coming with the new build.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 for phones will be arriving later this year for both new devices and those currently running on Windows Phone 8.1. This will be after Windows 10 for desktop is released.
