Government says everyone now has 2Mbps internet access

An exceptional broadband means there is better opportunity to receive data, send emails and files electronically. It is also an avenue that is particularly beneficial for industries and businesses that send large data files on a regular basis.

According to the government, broadband access of at least 2Mbps is currently available to every citizen in the country. This is a goal that has been made a reality by the Culture, Media and Sports departments. These departments have gone ahead to introduce satellite grants for those in low-speed areas. “This scheme offers immediate assistance to those homes and businesses in Dorset with the slowest speeds and is all part of our transformation of the UK’s digital landscape,” said the Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey.

Should there be individuals that cannot access the available internet speeds; the departments have set a grant of £350 towards the installation of a satellite that will boost the broad band’s speed to about 20Mbps. In addition, the departments have given a subscription to a service that is provided by one of the government’s broadband partners costing about £25 per month.

This scheme is set to be run by local governments. They will be deciding on the eligible parties for all connections. According to the government, an estimated figure of 300, 000 properties will benefit from this program countrywide. However, it is vital to note that high-intensity usage such as gaming will not be supported by the satellite-powered network.

In relation to the Universal Service Commitment’ specified in the Digital Britain report presented in 2009 to the Labor government, the current scheme forms part of it. Although the initial plan was to have the connection completed by 2012 in the entire country; it was later pushed to 2015.

The next big project is based on providing the entire country with a superfast broadband to about 95% by 2017. For those already signing up to the government’s latest initiative, the chances are that they will automatically upgrade to fiber should the scheme be introduced in their area.

“Our rollout of superfast broadband has already reached additional 3.5 million homes and businesses that would otherwise have missed out. We are making tremendous progress, but it is a massive engineering project and won’t happen overnight,” Vaizey added.

Superfast broadband offers improved upload and download speeds and provides a more reliable service. As a result, this will be certain to give your business better opportunities. Also, the high speed internet will enhance communication and help save on costs associated with convectional modes of communication.
